Today we are celebrating two special days. World Humanitarian World Humanitarian Day and World Photography Day.

Both are important because without photography, we could not recognize the humanitarian work of all the volunteers around the world.

World Humanitarian Day is a time to recognize those who face danger and adversity in order to help others.

Europe has a long and proud tradition of humanitarian service and is the birthplace of many of the world’s largest and most efficient relief organisations.

Throughout the years, EU Member States have engaged actively and donated generously to support the victims of numerous humanitarian emergencies.

Every day, humanitarian aid workers help millions of people around the world, regardless of who they are and where they are. World Humanitarian Day is a global celebration of people helping people.

World Humanitarian Day is also an opportunity to celebrate the spirit that inspires humanitarian work around the globe.

This year the UN and its humanitarian partners continue their ground-breaking campaign called The world needs more… which is the first-of-its-kind project that turns words into aid.

World Photo Day hosted its first global, online gallery in 2010 with the goal to unite local and global communities in a worldwide celebration of photography.

Since its initial launch, The World Photo Day project has grown from an idea into a global event as photographers around the globe have joined the celebration.

Between August 19-26 WPD opens a global gallery for submissions. Get involved with World Photo Day and share a small part of your world.

Education:

Humanitarianism it’s human beings at their cooperative, collaborative best and it happens all over the place, everyday, through informal activities that are built naturally into healthy communities and relationships.

How can we not include these two great events in the school curriculum. And why not join the two of them in a common project. It would be wonderful.

Invite your students to visit WHD website and WPD website to participate in one or two activities proposed. There are so many ! 

Oh ! By the way, the older students will be excited to read on Facebook and Twitter that #DavidGuetta has partnered with the United Nations for "The World Needs More. . ." campaign to help raise money for humanitarian needs around the world.

They will be so motivated to include different activities in their class work using the media. 

Let them show how they are 'digital' citizens. Of course, you as educators need to have social media guidelines in the classroom to help the students to be responsible online. I am sure you you know that. I wrote a lot about it on this blog.

Activities :

• Students can send a message/ tweet directly from #WHD website.

• They can do a #selfie of a humanitarian actin and/or do a shot of a good action they saw on the street, at the school, even at home.

• Perhaps they have in the family, a member who is a volunteer? They will be proud to share the story and a pic - who knows - with you and their classmates.

• Students can share their class projects on the official websites #WHD and #WPD, on the school website, even on a blog if the class have one.

• They can participate at the Global gallery of #WPD until the 26th August 2014 uploading photos.

They will love to publish the photos on the social media : Facebook, Twitter, Pintarest, Google + and interact with some students from other schools (school account ; individual account.)

Level : All levels

Of course educators will include different activities adjusting to the level they are teaching. I'm sure you will be creative.

Curricula: Civics, Languages ; Geography ; History ; Photography ; Music ; other.

Today we celebrate the International Youth Day. The United Nations define “youth” as persons between the ages of 15 and 24 years. 

Youth is a period of dramatic change, and the journey from childhood to adulthood can be complex, raising a host of mental health issues.

Youth with mental health conditions can often experience stigma and discrimination, which in turn can lead to exclusion and/or discourage people from seeking help for fear of being negatively ‘labelled’. Efforts are needed to overcome this stigma to ensure that young people with mental health conditions can lead full and healthy lives free of isolation and unnecessary shame, and that they openly seek the services and support they need.

Theme 2014: "Youth and Mental Health."

The theme of this International Youth Day is “Youth and Mental Health,” under the motto Mental Health Matters.

"UN DESA, through the Focal Point on Youth, and the Inter-Agency Network on Youth Development, promotes a multi-dimensional approach to addressing the challenges faced by young people with mental health issues, including tackling stigma and promoting social inclusion to enable all young people to achieve their aspirations and goals."

Selected written, photo, video and artwork entries will be chosen to be included in UN publication ‘Social Inclusion of Youth with Mental Health Conditions’ launched on International Youth Day and in our poster design for our IYD event. 

Selected written, photo, video and artwork entries will be showcased at UN event on 12 August at UN Headquarters, and online, via Pinterest and Facebook throughout the campaign. 

If not, you are still on time to raise awareness.

Activities :

• Call on your school, college, organization or community to create and improve services and programmes tailored for youth with mental health conditions.

• Ask your school, university or community centre to hold a discussion about mental health

• Create an “info point” about youth with mental health conditions in your town/village, at your high school, youth club or university.

• Organize a Google+ Hangout or online chat to discuss for instance stigma and discrimination that youth with mental health conditions often experience.

Off on holiday ! Now it's the time ! Well, finally I could have my summer holiday week. Not in Paris this year. But in Portugal! My beautiful country!

Summer break is obviously one of the best things humankind has ever come up with, I am excited! It's my 'real' time off this year.

I am looking forward to enjoy some summer activities. Going to the beach, relaxing reading, interesting concerts with family and friends. 

Impossible to forget books. Love reading on the beach or at a relaxing terrace. I am curious about the last J.K. Rowling fiction The Silkworm, I am reading The Cuckoo’s Calling.

Of course I love J.K. Rowling ! I read Harry Pottter saga in the classroom with my students.

In fact, I read an interesting article based on a research about Harry Potter's generation. Reading Harry Potter books has been helping to reduce prejudice.

That’s the conclusion of research just published in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology. It finds that, among young people, "reading J.K. Rowling’s book series—and, crucially, identifying with the lead character—can reduce bias toward stigmatized minority groups." 

Interesting! Harry Potter is back ? is the 2nd most-read post of July.

Fez ontem 100 anos que começou a Primeira Guerra Mundial. As 'Damas Enfermeiras' estiveram na frente de batalha, assistiram aos horrores de um dos piores conflitos do século XX que, tendo tido a sua origem na Europa, acabou por se entender a todos os continentes.

Portugal entrou no conflito só em 1916, mas entre os quase 90 mil homens que partiram para as trincheiras, encontravam-se dezenas de mulheres que lutavam pela saúde dos  soldados portugueses.

As “Damas Enfermeiras”, assim ficaram conhecidas na História, são algumas das heroínas portuguesas da Primeira Grande Guerra, mas há uma em particular que captou o coração do país. Maria Francisca Machado, filha do então presidente da República, Bernardino Machado. Fazia parte do grupo e foi talvez a mais conhecida de todas.

Em 1916, quando a sociedade limitava o papel da mulher aos cuidados do lar, dezenas de senhoras da mais alta sociedade partiram para a I Guerra Mundial como enfermeiras voluntárias. 

Maria Francisca Dantas Machado foi uma dessas “Damas Enfermeiras”. Nasceu em Vila do Conde em 1889, fez o curso de enfermagem, e partiu para França.

Prestou um valioso trabalho voluntário nos hospitais de campanha do Serviço de Corpo Expedicionário Português, nos campos da Flandres.

Morreu em 1918, já longe da frente de batalha, quando acompanhava o seu pai no exílio, em Hendaye. 

“A morte dela comoveu a comunidade”, explica o seu sobrinho, Manuel Sá Marques, que nunca conheceu a “Tia Maria” e que hoje é médico.

História Enfermagem em Portugal :

As Damas Enfermeiras foram para a guerra sem armas e viram os horrores de um dos piores conflitos do século XX. 

O seu exemplo levou à criação das escolas de enfermagem de Lisboa e do Porto.

As escolas de enferrmagem são um agente fundamental para a formação humana, cultural, científica e técnica de futuros profissionais de cuidados de saúde e apoio humano.

O apoio das mulheres ao Corpo Expedicionário Português em França, sobretudo no hospital de Ambleteuse, levou o governo a criar, em 1918, as escolas de enfermagem de Lisboa e do Porto. 

Portugal em duas frentes : breves factos

O historiador Nuno Severiano Teixeira, autor de livros sobre a Primeira Guerra Mundial, explica que o Governo português participou neste conflito em duas frentes distintas. 

Por um lado havia a necessidade de preservar as colónias, o que levou ao envio de tropas para Angola e Moçambique. Mas a grande polémica foi o envio dos cerca de 90 mil soldados para a frente europeia, na Flandres, que se saldou numa derrota que mostrou a inexperiência dos militares portugueses e nunca foi bem aceite ou compreendida pelo povo.

Educação:

Sem dúvida que dar a conhecer os factos históricos ligados ao papel fundamental das'Damas Enfermeiras durante a I Guerra Mundial, nas aulas de História 9º ano, numa fase em que muitas jovens se sentem ainda divididas em relação à via profissional a seguir a partir do 10º ano poderá ser um recurso a não menosprezar.

Por outros lado, é sabido que essa visão do lugar da mulher ligado ao lar que foi praticada ao longos de tantos anos, e ainda hoje se vislumbra em alguns redutos, deverá ser debatida em qualquer área curricular do ensino básico aó ensino secundário, tendo por base o exemplo dado por mulheres portuguesas, as Damas Enfermeiras, já lá vão 100 anos.

Foram várias a mulheres portuguesas pioneiras em diversas áreas ao longo da nossa História e nunca é demais realçar este lado precursor feminino.

Sabe-se  qe o governo de Portugal da época não apreciou  o facto de haver mulheres na Frente de Guerra e criou uma lei de modo a que não fosse permitida  a presença de mais enfermeiras.

Esta postagem, para além do valor pedagógico que poderá ter, pretende acima de tudo ser um tributo às mulheres que tiveram a coragem de partir como voluntárias para frente de uma guerra tão sangrenta como foi a Primeira Grande Guerra, e que quase sempre são esquecidas ou relegadas para segundo plano.
