Last 16th October the World Food Day has been celebrated as every year since 1981. An opportunity to (re)think how we manage a finite resource, the water, in degradation and over-exploited by sectors such as agriculture and industry.

Water is essential to life on Earth. It covers the majority of the Earth's surface, makes up over 50% of our bodies, produces our food, and supports livelihoods.  

But this precious resource is not infinite and we need to stop taking it for granted. What we eat, and how that food is produced all affect water. That's way we celebrate every year The Word Water Day 

Together, we can take water action for food and be the change.

With the slogan ‘’Water is life, water is food. Leave no one behind’’ the campaign, is communicating in over 50 languages across more than 150 countries. 

FAO/ UN are calling for action from governments, the private sector, civil society, and individuals, including youth, to safeguard water.

The Global World Food Day Ceremony took place last Monday, 16 October 2023. Ok! But don’t miss the third edition of Junior World Food Day, tomorrow 19 October. 

This fun-filled event will feature: stories, music, art and dance. 

Hear from special guests who will join youth for a conversation guaranteed to inspire water action for food!

This unique event brings together chefs, influencers, innovators, and special guests with young minds for an engaging, cross-cultural conversation.

A cooking show as well to inspire water action for food. 

During this important event with inspiring stories, music and art, there will be a live performance of the 2023 youth music video by the Piccola Orchestra di Tor Pignattara and friends.

In the spirit of leaving no one behind, FAO teamed up with The Kabin Studio Cork and POTP to produce this year’s Junior #WorldFoodDay anthem.

Teachers, invite your students to listen to this song and share it with your friends to encourage them to take #WaterAction every day!

And why not to create and produce their own song with the help of different curricula teachers?! I know you will do it !

• Join the World Food Day Poster Contest!

Students love contests. So let's do it! What comes to mind when you try to imagine a world where everyone has access to food and water? 

Your actions can also contribute to a sustainable future. Show your creativity by designing a poster of your water action for food. 

Example: Take a photo or scan your poster and submit your entry by filling out the form on FAO website. 

Winners:

Three winners in each age category will be selected by a jury and announced here in December. 

Winners will be promoted by FAO offices around the world and receive a certificate and surprise gift bag.  

Ages: To participate, you must be aged 5 - 19.

Deadline:  Entries until 3 November 2023.

A Sea of Words: Euro-Mediterranean contest

A Sea of Words 2012 is being held again with the aim of contributing to the encouragement of dialogue between peoples, and exchange of knowledge and experiences between different local and international traditions. 

In the framework of the European Year for Solidarity between Generations, 2012 theme is aimed at "promoting the vision and expectations of young people about their future and the contact between different generations of Euro-Mediterranean societies."

"The contest is aimed at the production of short stories whose content is related to the creation and/or consolidation of dynamics aiming to reinforce volunteering activities, one of the active citizenship elements to promote intergenerational solidarity, the evolution of values and societies, and the expression of different sensitivities and realities of young people in the region.

Literary production is a fundamental means for the expression and description of facts, ideas and emotions that can be directly transmitted to and by young people all over the Euro-Mediterranean region. From this point of view, the object is to obtain literary stories – based on reality and purely fictional – that describe different experiences of children, parents and grandparents facing the future."

Calls and Conditions:

The Anna Lindh Foundation and the European Institute of the Mediterranean are calling the 5th edition of the international short story contest A Sea of Words.

Aims:

Young people from the 42 countries of the Euro-Mediterranean space. 

The contest is aimed at the production of short stories focusing on the issues of children, parents and grandparents facing the future, with the objective of showing the different sensitivities and realities in the Euro-Mediterranean region, from the point of view of the youths who live there.

Theme:

"Youth Future and the Dialogue Between Generations"

Participation Requisites:

Young people aged between 18 and 30 that are citizens of one of the 42 countries of the Euro-Mediterranean space.

Story formats:

The short stories cannot exceed a length of 2,500 words and can be written in any of the official languages of the participant countries. 

They must be original and unpublished works. The short stories must address issues related to intercultural dialogue, mainly of a political, socio-cultural, economic and environmental nature.

Deadline and Place of Submission of the Stories:

All the short stories must be sent to the following email address:

concurso@iemed.org 

To submitt the short stories, authors must attach their personal details:

• names and surnames, 
• date of birth, 
• nationality, 
• postal address
• e-mail

What a captivating digital resource to include into school curriculum to share the love of books and the love of reading in languages curricula in school!

As educators, can we make every day a World Book Day? Yes! We can! And this short animated narrative can be a marvelous interactive resource to do it if you include the animation and the app into your lessons.

I know how students love to read when their teachers love books. I can assure you. It's a transmissible love! Even to those students who are poor readers.

It occurred to me that there is a simple pedagogical principle that explains the appeal of very early learning, homeschooling. Reading begins at home with family since childhood. But sometimes this is not possible. There are some parents who are poo readers as well.

So teachers are important references to students. We must valorize books and reading loud in the classroom! And we can do a better job if we love to read.

My thoughts: 

• Narrative is central to children and young students learning. They will use it as a tool to help them organise their ideas and to explore new ideas and experiences

• Children and teens love play a book character, it means they end up owning a new vision about the Narrative. So, let them organize a presentation;
• 
  
• Composing stories, whether told or written, involves a set of skills and authorial knowledge but is also essential to students, expressing themselves creatively and imaginatively;

• School library will have a symbolic place in schools. Students will go the the school library enthusiastically to discover new books and new readings.

• The school librarian teacher's role is implementing a good choice of books, e-books, and e-Readers into the school libraries. However, implementing e-readers into school libraries program is about more than just jumping on the latest technological bandwagon or attempting to reinvent the library in order to stay relevant. It’s about good practices in school library, an impressive support for students.

Some thoughts:

The importance of reading in the school! No matter the resources we can choose on formal learning and informal learning. 

Don't underestimate the power of magic of reading in the classroom with your students appealing to all these wonderful digital resources.

Children and young people love this kind of stories, right? It's a captivating narrative text, with lots of magic, adventure and special values: Love of books, love of libraries.

The love of books and love of reading must begin in kindergarten to be continued on primary, elementary and secondary education.

One important point: schools need more time for reading aloud, choosing and sharing the pleasure of reading books and not just excerpts. The entire story is a pleasure to the students. 

Teachers will do reading exciting all along the school time.

I quite agree about the encouragement and success of World Book Day. World Book Day always generates huge enthusiasm for reading in children's school.

If I have any suggestions as how can schools keep that excitement about reading going all through the school? Yes! Love reading. Love libraries, bookstores to go with students. They must feel the atmosphere.

Go to the the public library in your city, some bookstores with your students. Encourage them to buy their own books. Whether they spend their pocket money on a book means every child can add a title to their own bookshelves. 

Research shows that owning books plays a key role in encouraging reading and we need to do all we can to make that happen.

Finally, students get better results in other school matters such as sciences, maths, history or geography, because everything goes through reading skills.

Seeing students contextualize the information and literacy skills that we have previously taught is probably one of the most joyful experiences as an educator.
