2014 est le 100ième anniversaire du déclenchement de la Grande Guerre (1914-2014).

Europeana ne pourrait pas oublier cet événement tragique qui a fait tant de victimes. Le site propose aux jeunes européens une pan européenne ressource historique très  intéressante.

En raison de cette occasion Classroom4.eu lance un concours d’essais pour les élèves européens de 16 à 19 ans. 

Des élèves à travers l’Europe feront des recherches sur leur ville en 1914 pour en raconter une autre histoire de cette année.

"Les événements en Europe à cette époque ne devaient pas nécessairement conduire à la guerre et les gens ont vécu dans cette année des expériences différentes de celles figurant dans les résumés des manuels d’histoire à l’école. "

Nous savons tous, enseignants, parents, qu'il y a des jeunes très doués. Et que beaucoup s'intéressent à l'Histoire et aiment vraiment écrire sur des faits historiques.

Pourquoi pas les motiver à participer à ce concours qui explore plusieurs compétences qu'ils ont acquis au long de leur vie scolaire.

World Environment Day is an annual event on 5 June that is aimed at being the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action. 

World Environment Day is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and focuses political attention and action.

World Environment Day activities are involving everyone from everywhere. 

World Environment Day is also a day for people from all walks of life to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook for themselves and future generations.

Theme 2019:

The theme for this year’s World Environment Day celebrations is  Think.Eat.Save. 

Think.Eat.Save is an anti-food waste and food loss campaign that encourages you to reduce your footprint. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted. 

This is equivalent to the same amount produced in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa. At the same time, 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger.

Each year, Clean Up the World Members participate in a range of activities to celebrate World Environment Day.

Education:

World Environment Day (WED) is also a day for people from all walks of life to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook for themselves and future generations.

Here we are writing about Civics and Environmental education at schools. So important to help our your students became engaged citizens.

Yes! Because World Environmental Day is not about a day! WED is about every day! Schools have an important role. 

Educators must teach environmental values in different moments of their lessons, providing some thoughts and digital educational resources, educate young people for a sustainable future and inspiring them being a good example. 

Of course you can't forget to invite your students to use their devices (iPad, smartphone, tablet) for developing interactive activities.

Students will evolve in creative green projects that they will share with colleagues, families, friends and pen-pals. They will become good young ecologists.

Level: All levels (adapt to the level everyone is teaching).

Curricula: Cross-curricular: Languages, Sciences; Arts (Design, Photograph, Multimedia).

Some Activities for students:

• Make a video with your class: invite students to write the script (Languages curriculum and Multimedia);

• Start a slogan contest on Twitter. Every student will write a slogan and publish it on Twitter on the hashtag #WED2013;

The best 5 slogans of every class will have a prize (ask for help to a librarian or tech store); 

• Plan and create a page on Facebook (school or class account) and invite other students from the school to interact with on thematic subjects, videos, songs, famous environmentalists);

• Invite students to write stories, poems, interviews, drama, letters to pen-pals about environment and publish them on a green class blog;

• Make some photos (outdoor class) and publish them on a green class blog;

• Organize a school clean-up or neighborhood school clean-up;

• Start a campaign to stop using plastic bags at school, home, and ask the community to do the same;

• Stop food waste at school canteen, home, markets.

Whatever you do, tell UNEP about it! All your activities will be posted on the website.

And I continue to write about Arts education to celebrate today the International Jazz Day for the 2nd year. 

On April 30, 2012, UNESCO celebrated the 1st International Jazz Day. 

"This day is destined to raise awareness in the international community regarding jazz’s virtues as an educational tool, as a vehicle for peace, unity, dialogue, and for enhanced cooperation between peoples." 

Spurred by the success of the first celebration, UNESCO, in partnership with the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz (TMIJ) is organizing the second International Jazz Day on April 30th, 2013.

In April 2012, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Herbie Hancock and TMIJ spearheaded and organized the historical events which took place around the world where jazz legends gathered together for key events at UNESCO’s Headquarters in Paris, at the United Nations’ Headquarters in New York, as well as at the emblematic Congo Square in New Orleans. 

From Algiers to Buenos Aires, from Kuala Lumpur to Warsaw, from Lomé to Santo Domingo, more than a hundred countries celebrated this day.

Istambul is the official host city for 2013. Turkey has an age-old tradition of jazz.  Munir Ertegun, Turkish Republic’s first ambassador to Washington in the 1930s, opened his embassy’s parlors to African American jazz musicians, who gathered there to play freely in a socio-historical context which was deeply divided by racial segregation at the time. 

"Turkey welcomes the opportunity to host UNESCO’s International Jazz Day on 29-30 April, 2013, in Istanbul. On this occasion, we shall celebrate jazz music not only as a global language of human soul, but also that of more inclusive societies, mutually enhancing civilisations, and UNESCO ideals."

Some Activities to introduce jazz music at school:

• Play video clips of jazz performances. Ask sutdents if they already knew jazz music; 

• Play jazz recordings in your classroom. Discuss with your students what they do or don’t like about the music.

• Decorate your classroom with jazz posters, or pictures of jazz artists. Ask students to complete the selection;

• Encourage students to explore some of the many great jazz websites as BlueNote or online magazines as Jazzyz Magazine. 

• Schedule a jazz-themed performance or concert by your school band or choir if you are a Music teacher;

• Invite a local expert from a Voicational Jazz School to conduct the listening session or give a talk to your class;

• Ask your students to draw or write about how jazz makes them feel or think;

• Use one of the many lesson plans available at www.jazzinamerica.org if you are a not a Music teacher;

• Have students research the local roots of jazz or visit the Vocatonal Jazz School in your town or city;

• Ask your students to interview older relatives about their experiences with jazz music. Have students listen to their favorite songs and share the results with the class;

• Have students write a skit or play based on the life of a great jazz musician.

Today, Saturday 23 March, at 8:30 PM (local time), lights will switch off around the globe for Earth Hour and people will commit to actions that go beyond the hour.

The simple idea of switching off lights for an hour to drive action on climate change began in Australia in 2007.

"Born out of a hope that we could mobilize people to take action on climate change, Earth Hour now inspires a global community of millions of people in 7,001 cities and towns across 152 countries and territories to switch lights off for an hour as a massive show of concern for the environment."

It may only be symbolic, bu watching iconic buildings such as the Eiffel Tower and Sydney Opera House be plunged into darkness sends a powerful message.

In 2011 more than 5,200 cities and towns in 135 countries worldwide switched off their lights for Earth Hour 2011! 

In 2012, more than 7,000 cities and towns in 152 countries worldwide will switch off their lights for Earth Hour, making it the largest climate campaign ever! 

In Portugal, more than 90 cities and towns and 500 monuments switched off their lights such as Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, Cristo-Rei and Convento de Cristo.

Education:

As you know, I have been out in Brussels to participate at the European Forum Learning Futures and Innovaton. I had to prepare my presentation the last two weeks before. And I came home on 20 March.

So, it has been difficult to me to write three posts in three days in a row. I already wrote that blogging is for inspire teachers when I have the time between work.

Students like to commit on environmental causes. A lot! They dare and they do! I wrote about Earth Hour 2011 and Talking about Earth Hour with students.

And my ex-students prepared a post on their blog Hora do Planeta 2013. They are amazing! They continue their blog even they left school. We only met on the internet now.

Please search for some activities if you like. But I am sure that you prepared your lessons carefully and your students are well motivated to dare to save the Planet, today 8:30-9:00PM (local time).

At this moment, many countries are celebrating already Earth Hour. Follow on Facebook or Twitter.
